5 Best Practices for Securing Remote Access

Smartphones and tablets have become widely available in recent years, revolutionizing the way we live. It is now common to use these mobile devices on a daily basis not only for personal communications, but also for business purposes. As such, there is a strong and constant demand for remote access.

As an employer, it can be a challenge to provide secure remote access to increasingly large groups of employees, such as telecommuters and day-extenders; however, there are a number of technology solutions that can be implemented to meet this challenge, including the following:

  1. Determine Business Needs. Before hiring a WiFi technician for cabling installation, it’s important that you take a step back and analyze the specific needs of your business. Many businesses have legacy remote access infrastructures in place, which require specific devices in order to receive access to the network. While these infrastructures worked well in the past, this is no longer the case due to the large variety of smartphone, tablet and laptop brands in the marketplace. For this reason, it is essential that you thoroughly assess your business and the needs of your employees, so you are able to choose the best remote access system for installation by a qualified Wifi technician.
  2. Move Apps to Cloud Services. Employees requiring access outside of the office are often granted basic application access for services, which includes TLS-secured Outlook Web Access and Exchange ActiveSync. While these corporate technology solutions allow immediate needs to be met, they cannot be leveraged to support more advanced applications. In order to address this, an increasing number of companies are hiring WiFi technicians to help them move specific applications to secure cloud services.
  3. Protect Corporate Assets. A number of companies focus on security from a device standpoint with many allowing only one or two specific devices as opposed to a wide variety of devices. It is important to note, however, that you can allow access to a range of devices while still maintaining strong security. Most remote access VPNs today have the capability to detect endpoint device characteristics, assess risks and install established security settings. For this reason, you should shift your security focus from devices to the protection of corporate assets.
  4. Protect Data. VDI is often used for remote employees that require access to corporate data. This system is capable of protecting data while in transit, but doesn’t protect resting data. To create a more secure system that protects data at all times on all devices, including smartphones and tablets, it is essential that the VPN integrate with endpoint measures, such as remote wipe and disk encryption. It is also important that business applications and data be grouped apart from the rest of the endpoint as it allows the company to easily configure, monitor and delete data when a device is lost or no longer in use.
  5. Prepare for Mobility. Smartphones, tablets and laptops allow employees to work from anywhere, including at home, at the office or at the coffee shop down the street, meaning endpoints are mobile. As such, security risk varies as devices roam between public and private networks. For this reason, it is essential that you work with a WiFi technician to provide corporate technology solutions that protect information in these gaps. Cabling installation experts can install a location-aware system that seamlessly changes to the proper security policies for the network.

Taking the above corporate technology solutions into consideration will help you to establish secure remote access for your company.
