What Is Data Cabling?
Data cabling is the physical, structured wiring that runs through a building. Its purpose is to facilitate a fast, strong, and uninterrupted telecommunications system. Correctly designing and implementing a data cabling structure ensures predictable performance and allows for future expansion and relocation.
Hardware can plug directly into the main cabling area where the cables originate. The cables can also be designed to terminate at distribution points, linking locally to desks around the office. Or the design can carry cabling directly to each desk in cases where furniture isn’t expected to move.
A data cabling system must cover all elements of the building’s hardware and technology requirements to perform as expected. For instance, if a computer with a 500 megahertz (MHz) connection sits 260 feet from the main cabinet, it needs a Cat6a cable to support these transmission requirements. Cat6 cabling caps out at 250 MHz and 180 feet, so this would not be sufficient.
Cable materials matter as well. While copper cabling was widely used in the past, fiber optic cabling provides a faster, more efficient connection with minimal maintenance and easier expansion capabilities. If you are upgrading your data cabling, we almost always recommend fiber optics for these reasons.

Which Businesses Benefit From Having a Data Connection?
A wide variety of businesses need a stable, reliable data connection to provide services and avoid impacting their bottom line. Here are a few examples:
-
Call centers offer phone support that relies almost exclusively on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
-
Trading companies depend on a reliable data connection to make decisions in a fraction of a second.
-
Retailers use point-of-sale (POS) software, credit card terminals, and real-time inventorying, all of which rely on having a stable data connection.
-
Financial institutions need reliable connectivity to avoid downtime, which would leave them unable to operate.
-
News agencies flourish when they can provide up-to-the-minute news. A slow or downed connection could mean losing the edge over competing outlets.
