802.11ac Devices Will Drive More Wi-Fi Offloading
As explained in our previous blog post, Mobile Data Offloading, the increasing demand for bandwidth from mobile devices is spurring the rapid adoption of next-generation Wi-Fi technology. The new 802.11ac devices are quickly driving more and more mobile data offloading from cellular to Wi-Fi networks due to the higher data rates and greater capacity.
According to a recent poll conducted by Wakefield Research, 60 percent of U.S. respondents indicated they are using Wi-Fi for multimedia applications more now than they were three years ago. With Wi-Fi technician certified 802.11ac mobile devices, tablets, laptops, and consumer electronic products set to launch in 2014, this research proves that the following are crucial and much-needed Wi-Fi improvements:
- 802.11ac products should provide reduced latency and data rates more than double those of a typical 802.11n network.
- The new standard should also handle Ultra HD and 4K video, multimedia and rapid file transfers with ease.
The 802.11ac standard provides up to three times the speeds possible with the present 802.11n technology. The higher speeds are attained through advances such as support for wider frequency bands and more complex antenna configurations.
802.11ac operates in the 5 GHz band, which is less congested than the 2.4GHz band. However most Wi-Fi certified 802.11ac products are expected to operate in both bands to support the older 802.11n standard at 2.4GHz. Wi-Fi routers used by hotspot providers will skyrocket based on the assumption that most handset vendors will be using 802.11ac.
The move by 802.11ac toward the 5GHz band will help improve the strength of Wi-Fi technology, making it more attractive to operators who are looking to offload cellular data traffic while maintaining the same level of experience and reliability.
