Improving the Classroom Experience with Increased Bandwidth

The United States educational system is in the midst of transformational change due to widespread adoption of technologies, including video, mobile devices, and cloud services. Given the enormous potential of these technologies to improve educational outcomes, schools and libraries across the nation want to do more, not less, with technology.

Other nations are making major investments in digital education, and if the U.S. does not make appropriate investments, it risks falling behind. One of the keys to providing the skills necessary to help our students compete is providing quality Internet access to our students.

Today, 80% of schools and libraries believe their bandwidth does not meet their current needs, with most schools having less than one megabit per second, according to a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) report. The nonprofit EducationSuperHighway further explained that a typical public school has about the same bandwidth of a single family home. The difference is that public schools have hundreds or more users vying for the same Internet access, which deteriorates performance for everyone.

It’s no secret that fundamental changes in the way that teachers teach and students learn are underway. Some schools and districts are abandoning print textbooks for their digital counterparts, watching lectures at home and doing collaborative study in the classroom, while others are connecting with students, teachers, and subject matter experts across town, across the country, or across the world.

These changes have created a tipping point in education. It is critical to improve the classroom experience with increased bandwidth and wireless network technologies in order to:

  • Deliver a media-rich, robust digital learning experiences for students
  • Prepare students for a global environment
  • Level the playing field for rural students
  • Improve professional development to increase skills of teachers
  • Enable online learning
  • Support collaboration with teachers across districts, states, and nations

Increasing broadband is no longer a luxury, but a necessity to connect with both students and parents in and out of the classroom. To help educators do their jobs more effectively and efficiently, President Barack Obama’s goal is to have 99% of students connected to superfast Internet within five years. The FCC is weighing changes to the already current E-rate Program in order to increase connectivity in schools.

It is clear that technology innovation is changing the classroom and the very notion of learning itself.
